Center Street
The Cover of this issue shows Center Street in the winter
of 1878, with an announcement at the bottom that Rev. Patrick T.
Hannon will speak on Rutland and the Catholic Churches.
The opening page feature the President’s Column and discusses the
acquisition of a new home for the Society, as well
as a few “briefs” including one that mentions a presentation by
Lilial Baker Carlisle who spoke on Rutland Silversmiths and
Clockmakers. Made available were copies of her book Vermont
Clock and Watchmakers, Silversmiths and Jewelers: 1778-1878.
In the Who’s Who section Mrs. Barbara Chiolino is listed with her
particular interests in Rutland Silver and Portraits; as well as
Charles Conner who wrote a popular column for the Rutland
Herald entitled “100 years ago”.
As the magazine unfolds for its entirety there is a highly informative
map of the City of Rutland in 1852, showing not only streets but
individual houses listing the then current owners; a trove for those
following genealogical interests.
